This week’s is an extra special party. The simmering Channel Zoo atmosphere is sure to boil at this one, as the inimitable Cadenza label takes over the open air Zoo to conduct a Latin, folk, tribal, house and techno infused orchestra.
Not much need be said of label head Luciano: just ask those who’ve seen him lock Fabric in for hour after hour, weave long, meandering sets at DC:10, or the DJs who’ve elevated Luciano’s releases for Cadenza, Perlon or Klang to anthemic status in recent years.
And so to Reboot, aka Frankfurt musician Frank Heinrich who tonight performs live. An unrestrained producer and DJ who lets his groove do the taking, he releases on many labels owing to the many styles he works, but is always on point, and is a worthy member of the Cadenza family.
Next up, Mirko Loko, who melds bubbly tribal drums with subtly emerging melodies, shy strings and drowsy, melancholic bell patterns into a house and techno tapestry to really get lost in: Exactly the sort of involved sounds Cadenza are known for, and why they are so widely lauded.
Another innovative Swiss player is Lee van Dowski, with production skills employed by everyone from Anja Schneider to BPitch, Soma to Wagon Repair. The final Cadenza comrade on show tonight is Alex Picone, an Italian with as much emotive minimal flair as the rest of the label.
So, eat up the atmosphere, the flowers from the beautiful surrounding gardens, or the meat from the more traditional option – the BBQ - betwixt the stilt walkers and fire breathers, the light shows and super sonics. Whatever your take on life, wherever you come from, there’s something for you in amongst the lionesses, monkeys, bears and tigers who dress up and get down at each Zoo party.
Add into that underground tastemakers, Cadenza, and a protracted sunset in the Ibizan hills, with 2500 people who’ll be as excited about it as you are, and you have something really quite special.
